EDITORS COMMENTS
The Empire Hotel at Lowestoft, Suffolk, stands proudly by the sea, a red brick edifice of Edwardian elegance that has borne witness to the ebb and flow of time. Opened in 1900, the hotel was a popular resort for holidaymakers seeking the bracing sea air and leisurely pursuits. However, by the 1920s, the tides of history had brought about a change. In 1921, the Metropolitan Asylums Board acquired the Empire Hotel and transformed it into a hospital for tuberculosis patients. The once bustling hotel, filled with the sounds of laughter and the clatter of cutlery, was now a place of quiet contemplation and healing. The tennis courts, once the site of lively matches and friendly competition, were replaced with grassy expanses for patients to take their daily walks. The promenade, a stone's throw away, offered a chance to breathe in the fresh sea air and take in the picturesque views. The hospital's patients, many of whom were suffering from the ravages of poverty and illness, found solace in the care and attention they received. The Metropolitan Asylums Board, a charitable organization, provided them with a roof over their heads and the best medical care available at the time. The hospital's red brick walls offered a sense of security and stability, a stark contrast to the uncertainty and fear that often accompanied a tuberculosis diagnosis. Despite the transformation, the Empire Hotel retained its air of history and grandeur. The twenties may have brought change, but the building's Edwardian roots remained firmly in place. And so, the Empire Hotel at Lowestoft, Suffolk, continued to stand as a beacon of hope and healing by the sea.
