EDITORS COMMENTS
This intricately embroidered badge of the Coldstream Guards was worked by Corporal Tom Hughes, service number 17321, of the 2nd Battalion, in March 1917 at The Park, Hurley Common, near Atherstone in Warwickshire. The badge, admitted on November 6th, bears the inscription "Another note on label reads 'A Birmingham policeman had his leg broke on the Somme'". The Coldstream Guards, one of the oldest and most decorated regiments in the British Army, have a rich history that dates back to the late 17th century. During World War I, the regiment saw action on the Western Front, including the Battle of the Somme. This commemorative art piece serves as a poignant reminder of the sacrifices made by the soldiers of the Coldstream Guards during this pivotal period in military history. The intricate stitching and attention to detail show the skill and dedication of Corporal Hughes in creating this unique and historical artifact. The badge is a testament to the enduring legacy of the Coldstream Guards and the bravery of its members, both past and present.
