EDITORS COMMENTS
This print depicts Elizabeth Patterson Bonaparte (1785-1879), the first wife of Napoleon Bonaparte's younger brother, Jerome. Born in Baltimore, Maryland, Elizabeth was the daughter of wealthy merchant William Patterson. In 1803, at the age of 18, she married Jerome Bonaparte, who was then the French consul in the United States. The union was a highly publicized and extravagant affair, with elaborate celebrations held in both Baltimore and Philadelphia. However, the marriage was short-lived. In 1805, after only two years, the Bonaparte brothers, under pressure from Napoleon, had the marriage annulled. The annulment was based on the grounds that Jerome had not been legally divorced from his previous wife, Elizabeth's cousin, when he married Elizabeth. Despite the annulment, Elizabeth continued to style herself as "Mrs. Jerome Bonaparte" and refused to renounce her title. She became a controversial figure in both American and European society, and her defiance of Napoleon's authority added to her allure. This print, created in 1879, captures the enigmatic and independent spirit of Elizabeth Patterson Bonaparte. Her striking features, elegant attire, and regal posture convey the strength and determination that defined her throughout her life. The intricate details of the print, from the delicate lace collar to the intricate folds of her gown, transport us back to the opulent world of early 19th century high society.
