Elisabeth Charlotte, Duchesse d'Orleans, was born on December 21, 1737, in the Palace of Château de Saint-Cloud, France, to Jean-Baptiste, Comte de La Haye-Sainte-Ruine, and Charlotte-Elisabeth de La Trémoille. Raised in the court of Versailles, she was known for her beauty, intelligence, and wit. In 1753, at the age of fifteen, she married Louis Philippe II, Duke of Orléans, the younger brother of King Louis XV. The marriage was politically motivated, as the Duke of Orléans was a powerful figure in French politics and the alliance was intended to strengthen the royal family's position. Elisabeth Charlotte proved to be a devoted and loving wife, bearing her husband ten children over the course of their marriage. She was also known for her patronage of the arts and her charitable works, particularly her support of the Hôpital des Enfants-Trouvés, a home for abandoned children. In 1789, during the French Revolution, the Duke of Orléans was forced to flee France and went into exile in England. Elisabeth Charlotte remained in France with her children, and was able to protect their property and assets during the tumultuous period. She died on December 10, 1806, at the age of sixty-eight, and was buried in the Royal Basilica of Saint-Denis.
