This handcolored copperplate engraving depicts the Egyptian Vulture, Neophron percnoterus, an endangered species native to Africa. The Egyptian Vulture, also known as the Pharaoh's Chicken or the Rüppell's Griffon Vulture, is one of the oldest living species of Old World vultures. With its distinctive featherless, red head and neck, this vulture is easily recognizable. The Egyptian Vulture was widely distributed across Europe, Africa, and Asia until the late 19th century. However, due to habitat loss, poaching, and poisoning from the use of veterinary drugs, their population has drastically declined. Today, they are considered critically endangered in Europe and endangered in Africa. This beautiful illustration is from George Shaw and Frederick Nodder's The Naturalist's Miscellany, published in 1792. Shaw and Nodder were renowned English naturalists and zoologists of the late 18th and early 19th centuries. Their work was groundbreaking in the field of natural history, and their illustrations were highly regarded for their accuracy and artistic merit. The Egyptian Vulture is shown in its natural habitat, with its head turned towards its prey.
