1814 Churchman Edwin Chapin Hubbell

EDITORS COMMENTS
Edwin Hubbell Chapin: A Devoted Churchman and Prolific Writer of the Nineteenth Century This evocative portrait captures the stern yet thoughtful visage of Reverend Edwin Hubbell Chapin (1814-1880), an influential American churchman and writer of the nineteenth century. Born in New York City, Chapin was educated at Columbia College and Andover Theological Seminary before embarking on a career in the ministry. He served various churches in New York and Massachusetts, eventually becoming the pastor of the historic Brattle Street Church in Boston in 1853. Chapin's literary talents were not limited to sermons and religious tracts. He authored numerous books on theology, history, and literature, including "The History of the United States of America from the Discovery of the Continent to the Present Time," which was widely used as a textbook in schools. His most famous work, however, was "The Jubilee: A Poem," which celebrated the fiftieth anniversary of American independence in 1861. The poem was published in numerous editions and was set to music, becoming a popular patriotic anthem. Despite his success as a writer, Chapin remained devoted to his pastoral duties. He was known for his eloquent sermons, which drew large crowds, and his charitable work, particularly his efforts to provide for the poor and homeless in Boston. Chapin's influence extended beyond his local community, as he was a leader in the American Unitarian Association and played a role in the Unitarian merger with the Universalist Church in 1865. This image of Edwin Hubbell Chapin, with its solemn expression and formal attire, captures the seriousness and dedication of a man who straddled the worlds of religion and letters, leaving a lasting impact on both.
