EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative image captures the intense clash between Dutch and Portuguese forces during the attack on the Fortress of Muxima in Angola, in 1646. Situated in the Bengo Province, along the banks of the Cuanza River, the fortress was a strategic stronghold for the Portuguese colonial power. The Dutch West India Company (WIC), determined to expand its territorial reach in Africa, launched a daring assault on the fortress. The Dutch forces, well-equipped and determined, stormed the fortified position with great ferocity. The Portuguese defenders, though outnumbered, were resolute and skillfully repelled the Dutch attack. The fortress, with its imposing walls and towers, proved to be a formidable obstacle for the Dutch invaders. Despite the Dutch forces' initial determination, their assault was ultimately unsuccessful. The Portuguese, with their deep knowledge of the terrain and their unwavering resolve, managed to hold their ground and repel the attack. This victory was a significant turning point in the colonial struggle for control of Angola and marked the end of Dutch attempts to gain a foothold in the region. This historical image, taken from the 17th century, provides a glimpse into the intense colonial conflicts that shaped the history of Africa during this period. The fortress of Muxima stands as a testament to the resilience and determination of the Portuguese colonial forces and their ability to defend their territorial claims against the encroaching Dutch.
