EDITORS COMMENTS
This striking photograph captures a moment in time, as the Duke of Connaught, Prince Arthur, is surrounded by his beloved family in 1917. The Duke, who was born in 1850 in Germany as Prince Arthur of Prussia, is seen here with his wife, Princess Luise Margarete of Prussia, later known as the Duchess of Connaught. To their left are their three children: Princess Patricia of Connaught, later Lady Patricia Ramsey (b. 1886), Prince Arthur of Connaught (b. 1883), and Princess Margaret of Connaught, later Crown Princess of Sweden (b. 1882). The Duchess of Connaught, who was the youngest daughter of Emperor Frederick III and Empress Victoria of Germany, was a granddaughter of Queen Victoria of the United Kingdom. Her marriage to Prince Arthur in 1879 united the British and German royal families, and they went on to have four children. The eldest child, Princess Patricia, is seen here wearing a crown, indicating her status as the eldest daughter and heir to the Duke. The second child, Prince Arthur, would later become the 1st Marquess of Cornwall and Duke of Connaught and Strathearn. The youngest child, Princess Margaret, would marry Crown Prince Gustaf Adolf of Sweden in 1905, becoming the Crown Princess of Sweden. This photograph, taken in 1917, captures the family in their regal attire, reflecting their royal status and the importance of their roles within their respective countries. The image is a poignant reminder of the complex web of royal connections that existed in Europe before the First World War.
