The Drummer of Tedworth - Glanville

The tale of the Drummer of Tedworth (told by Thomas Glanville) recounted that local landowner, John Mompesson of Tedworth (now Tidworth, in Wiltshire), had accused a local drummer of extortion of money by false pretences. Further to winning the case, Mompesson discovered his house was plagued by drumming noises at night, which were assumed to have been inflicted on the unfortunate landowner by the drummer through witchcraft. A possible early documented example of a poltergeist. Date: 1681

EDITORS COMMENTS
The Drummer of Tedworth: A 17th Century Poltergeist Tale This evocative image, dating back to the late 17th century, tells the chilling story of John Mompesson of Tedworth, Wiltshire, and the infamous Drummer of Tedworth. According to local folklore, as recounted by Thomas Glanville in his 1681 work 'Saducismus Triumphatus,' Mompesson accused a local drummer of extorting money through false pretenses. After winning the court case, Mompesson was puzzled by inexplicable drumming noises that haunted his house at night. The drumming was assumed to be the work of the vengeful drummer, who was believed to have used witchcraft to inflict this mischief upon the landowner. The tale of the Drummer of Tedworth is an early documented example of a poltergeist, a type of supernatural spirit that is known to cause various forms of disturbance and mischief. This phenomenon, which has been reported throughout history, continues to intrigue and fascinate folklorists, paranormal investigators, and those with an interest in the unexplained. The legend of the Drummer of Tedworth adds to the rich tapestry of 17th century folklore and serves as a reminder of the enduring human fascination with the unknown and the supernatural. This print, which captures the essence of this intriguing tale, is a testament to the power of storytelling and the enduring allure of the paranormal.
