EDITORS COMMENTS
This powerful image captures the dramatic moment of the arrest of Colonel Alfred Dreyfus and General Maurice Picquart in the streets of Paris on the night of December 5, 1898. Dreyfus, a Jewish officer in the French Army, had been wrongfully convicted of treason and espionage in 1894 based on fabricated evidence. Picquart, an army intelligence officer, had uncovered evidence exonerating Dreyfus and was preparing to reopen the case. However, instead of being hailed as a hero, Picquart was arrested and transferred to Tunisia for his actions. The Dreyfus Affair was a major scandal in French history that exposed deep-seated anti-Semitism and corruption within the military and government. The affair began when a document, known as the "bordereau," was found in a military depot in 1894, containing information that appeared to be passed to the German embassy. Dreyfus was falsely accused of being the source of the document and was sentenced to life in prison on Devil's Island. Picquart, who had taken over the intelligence service after the discovery of the bordereau, became suspicious of the handwriting on the document and compared it to known samples. He discovered that the handwriting matched that of Major Esterhazy, who had previously been suspected of espionage but had been cleared due to lack of evidence. Picquart reported his findings to his superiors, but they ignored his evidence and instead ordered him to arrest Dreyfus. This arrest of Picquart was a turning point in the affair, as it brought widespread public attention to the case and sparked protests and demonstrations in favor of Dreyfus' innocence. Eventually, the truth was revealed, and Dreyfus was exonerated and reinstated in the army. Picquart was eventually cleared of any wrongdoing and returned to France as a hero. The Dreyfus Affair remains a significant moment in French history, highlighting the importance of truth, justice, and the rule of law.
