A dream caused by the perusal of Mrs. H. Beecher Stowes pop

A dream caused by the perusal of Mrs. H. Beecher Stowes popular work Uncle Toms Cabin. An imaginative and biting satire on Harriet Beecher Stowe and her recently published antislavery novel Uncle Toms Cabin. Printed serially beginning in June 1851, the novel first appeared in book form in 1852. The artist has concocted a chaotic, nightmarish vision, where armies of demons and other monsters battle in a barren, desert setting reminiscent of the infernal visions of Hieronymus Bosch and Jacques Callot. (Murrell points out, in fact, that the plate borrows its central motif--an enormous flying demon--from Callots Temptation of St. Anthony.) In the center a leering black man dressed as a Quaker holds a flag Women of England To The Rescue. To the left, near the mouth of a cave marked Underground Railway, Mrs. Stowe is pulled and harassed by demons. She holds up a book that reads, Uncle Toms Cabin, I Love the Blacks. Another woman (or perhaps Mrs. Stowe again) rides in a parade of demons on the right. In the distance, several monsters feed copies of Uncle Toms Cabin to a blazing fire. Date c1853. EDITORS COMMENTS
1. Title: A Dream Induced by Harriet Beecher Stowe's "Uncle Tom's Cabin" - A Satirical Vision This print, titled "A Dream Induced by Harriet Beecher Stowe's 'Uncle Tom's Cabin,'" is an imaginative and biting satire on Harriet Beecher Stowe and her groundbreaking antislavery novel, "Uncle Tom's Cabin." Published serially from June 1851, the novel first appeared in book form in 1852, sparking intense debate and controversy. The artist has masterfully created a chaotic, nightmarish vision, reminiscent of the infernal visions of Hieronymus Bosch and Jacques Callot. In this desolate, barren landscape, armies of demons and other monstrous creatures engage in relentless battle. At the heart of this tumultuous scene, a leering black man, dressed as a Quaker, brandishes a flag that reads "Women of England To The Rescue." To the left, near the entrance of a cave labeled "Underground Railway," Harriet Beecher Stowe is depicted, struggling and being harassed by demons. She clutches a book, the title of which is clearly visible: "Uncle Tom's Cabin, I Love the Blacks." The turmoil and chaos surrounding her underscore the profound impact her work had on the nation. On the right, another woman (or perhaps Mrs. Stowe herself) rides atop a parade of demons. In the distance, several monsters feed copies of "Uncle Tom's Cabin" to a blazing fire, symbolizing the backlash against the novel and its message. This print, created around 1853, is a testament to the power of Stowe's words and the intense emotions her work elicited during a time of great social upheaval in American history.
