18th Century Alismatales Araceae Arum Lily Baron Jacquin Monocot Monocotyledon Nicolaus Joseph Von Nicolaus Joseph Von Jacquin Root Angiospermae Magnoliophyta

EDITORS COMMENTS
This exquisite 18th century botanical illustration depicts the stunning Dracontium percusum, a member of the Araceae family, also known as Arum lilies or Arum-like plants. The Dracontium percusum is a monocotyledonous, monocot angiosperm, belonging to the order Alismatales within the class Magnoliophyta. This plant is native to the tropical regions of South America, particularly in Brazil. The illustration showcases the unique and intriguing features of this flowering plant. At the center, a large, yellow, spathe and spadix can be seen. The spathe is a modified leaf that forms a protective sheath around the spadix, which is a specialized inflorescence composed of numerous small flowers. The spadix is covered in tiny, unisexual flowers, with the female flowers located at the base and the male flowers towards the tip. This illustration was created by the renowned botanist and artist, Baron Nicolaus Joseph von Jacquin, in the late 18th century. Jacquin was a prolific botanist, producing numerous illustrations and descriptions of new plant species during his career. His work was instrumental in advancing the scientific understanding of the natural world during the Age of Enlightenment. The Dracontium percusum is a beautiful and fascinating plant, with its unique morphology and vibrant yellow color making it a standout among other flowering plants. This illustration serves as a testament to the intrigue and wonder that the natural world holds, and to the important role that botanical illustrations play in documenting and preserving the diversity of life on Earth.
