EDITORS COMMENTS
1. Title: "A Royal Gathering: Don Juan de Borbón and His Family, Including the Future King Juan Carlos I" This evocative photograph captures a moment in Spanish royal history, featuring Don Juan de Borbón, Duke of Santisteban del Puerto, and his wife Infanta Maria de las Mercedes de Borbón-Dos Sicilias y Orleans, along with their four children: Alfonso, Juan Carlos, Pilar, and Margarita. Taken in the late 1930s, this image offers a glimpse into the personal lives of the Spanish royal family, who were in exile during this period. Don Juan de Borbón (1913-1993) was the eldest son of Alfonso, Count of Barcelona, and his wife Victoria Eugenie of Battenberg. He was a grandnephew of King Alfonso XIII of Spain and a cousin of the exiled monarch, who had been deposed in 1931. Don Juan's marriage to Infanta Maria de las Mercedes, the youngest sister of the future King Juan Carlos I, was arranged to strengthen the claims of the Borbón dynasty to the Spanish throne. The couple's eldest son, Alfonso (b. 1937), would later become the Duke of Calabria and the head of the House of Bourbon-Two Sicilies. Juan Carlos (b. 1938), the second eldest, would eventually ascend to the Spanish throne in 1975, following the death of Francisco Franco. Pilar (b. 1936) and Margarita (b. 1939) are the younger sisters in the photograph. This poignant image showcases the close-knit bond between Don Juan and his family, as they gather together in exile, maintaining their royal lineage and traditions. The photograph serves as a reminder of the complexities and intricacies of European royal history, as well as the personal stories that lie behind the public personas of the monarchy.
