1848 Alias Borbon Carlos Claimant Dolores Maria Moustache Oval Sepia Throne
EDITORS COMMENTS
This sepia oval photograph captures the enigmatic figure of Don Carlos, Carlos Maria de los Dolores Borbon (1848-1909), the claimant to the Spanish throne. Born in Trieste, Italy, as the eldest son of the exiled Spanish Infante Felipe, Carlos was raised in the shadow of his uncle, King Alfonso XII, who died without issue in 1885. With no clear heir to the Spanish throne, Carlos, who had been living in exile in France, made his claim to the throne, fueling political tensions and instability in Spain. Don Carlos was a man of distinguished lineage, being a grandson of Ferdinand VII and Isabella II of Spain, and a nephew of Queen Isabella II. He wore the mantle of the Spanish monarchy with pride, donning the traditional dark jacket and moustache of the Spanish monarchs. However, his claim to the throne was not universally accepted, and he faced opposition from various factions within Spain and abroad. The photograph, taken in 1909, shows Don Carlos in the prime of his life, with a serious and determined expression. His piercing gaze seems to convey a sense of determination and resolve, as if he is ready to take on the challenges that lie ahead. The sepia tone adds an air of nostalgia and historical significance to the image, transporting us back to a time of political upheaval and royal intrigue in Spain. Despite his claims, Don Carlos never ascended to the Spanish throne, as he was ousted by military forces in 1923. He spent the remainder of his life in exile, living out his days in France. Nevertheless, his legacy as a contender for the Spanish throne remains an intriguing chapter in Spanish history, and this photograph serves as a poignant reminder of the complex and fascinating political landscape of the late 19th and early 20th centuries in Spain.
