EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph captures Don Carlos, also known as Carlos Maria de los Dolores de Borbon, the claimant to the Spanish throne in 1882. Born in 1848, Don Carlos was the eldest son of the deposed Spanish monarch, Isabella II, and was a central figure in the Carlist Wars, which raged in Spain from 1833 to 1876. In this striking image, taken in 1909, Don Carlos is depicted wearing a large-brimmed hat and a somber expression, with a serious and determined look in his piercing eyes. His head is turned slightly to the side, giving the impression of deep thought or contemplation. The background of the photograph is blurred, drawing the viewer's attention to the subject and his regal bearing. Despite his claim to the Spanish throne, Don Carlos was ultimately unsuccessful in his bid to regain the crown. In 1868, he was exiled from Spain following the Glorious Revolution, which led to the proclamation of the First Spanish Republic. He spent the remainder of his life in various European countries, including France, Portugal, and Italy. The photograph's title, "Don Carlos alias Moloch," is intriguing, as Moloch is a name associated with the Canaanite god of human sacrifice. It is unclear why this title was given to the image, but it may be a reference to Don Carlos's reputation as a fierce and unyielding warrior, who was willing to make great sacrifices in his quest for the Spanish throne. This photograph is a fascinating glimpse into the life of a complex and controversial historical figure, offering a glimpse into the rich and complex history of Spain during a time of political upheaval and change.
