EDITORS COMMENTS
This striking portrait captures the intense gaze and distinguished bearing of Don Carlos Buell, an American army officer who played a pivotal role in the American Civil War. Born on March 23, 1818, in Lawrenceville, Georgia, Buell rose through the ranks of the United States Army, eventually earning the rank of Major General. He is best known for his command during the Battle of Shiloh in 1862, where he led the Union Army's right wing in a hard-fought battle against Confederate forces under General Albert Sidney Johnston and General P.G.T. Beauregard. Buell's beard, which frames his strong jawline and adds to his air of authority, was a common feature among Civil War era military leaders. The image of Buell, with his piercing eyes and serious expression, conveys the gravity and determination of a man leading his troops into battle. The Battle of Shiloh, fought from April 6 to April 7, 1862, was one of the largest engagements of the Civil War and is considered a turning point in the conflict. Although the Union forces ultimately emerged victorious, the battle was costly for both sides, with over 23,000 casualties between them. Despite his success at Shiloh, Buell's military career was not without controversy. He was criticized for his slow advance towards Chattanooga, Tennessee, during the Chattanooga Campaign in 1863, which led to his removal from command. Buell retired from the army in 1869 and died on February 17, 1898. This powerful portrait serves as a reminder of Buell's significant contributions to American military history and the pivotal role he played in the Civil War.
