EDITORS COMMENTS
Plate XXVII from Francis Willughby's groundbreaking work "Ornithologic Libri Tres," published in 1676, showcases an intriguing assemblage of three distinct bird species: the Dodo (Raphus cucullatus), Peacock (Pavo cristatus), and Turkey (Meleagris gallopavo). This image, produced during the 17th century, represents a significant contribution to the field of ornithology. Francis Willughby (1635-1672), a renowned English naturalist, and his collaborator John Ray (1627-1705) meticulously described and illustrated all known birds at the time in this comprehensive three-volume work. Willughby's keen observation and attention to detail are evident in this plate, which presents the three birds in a studio setting. The Dodo, an extinct flightless bird native to the Indian Ocean island of Mauritius, is depicted lying on its side, its distinctive round body and large, round beak prominently displayed. The Peacock, with its iridescent green and blue plumage and extravagant train, is shown in profile, displaying its magnificent tail feathers. The Turkey, a common fowl, is shown in a more naturalistic pose, with its feathers ruffled and its head turned to face the viewer. This image is a testament to the beauty and diversity of the avian world, as well as the dedication and curiosity of naturalists like Willughby and Ray. Their work laid the foundation for modern ornithology and continues to inspire and fascinate us today.
