This image is taken from an album containing 328 photographs, compiled by Major Wilfred Herbert James Sale, MC, of the 3rd/4th County of London Yeomanry (Sharpshooters), between 1938 and 1940. Major Sale served with distinction during this period, earning the Military Cross for his bravery in action. The album provides a unique insight into the daily life and training of the soldiers during this time, as they prepared for the battles that lay ahead. The photograph is dated to 1940, a year that saw the beginning of major military campaigns in Europe, as the Allied forces sought to repel the advancing German forces.
