This poignant image captures the distress and hardship endured by the impoverished population of Paris in the year 1874. The aftermath of the Franco-Prussian War and the Paris Commune had left the city in a state of destitution. In this photograph, we see a group of women and children huddled together outside a pawnshop, their bedding and household possessions piled up beside them. The women, some with tears in their eyes, appear desperate as they prepare to part with their most essential belongings in exchange for meager funds.
