EDITORS COMMENTS
In this evocative photograph from the collection of Sapper G Penman, Royal Engineers, we witness a selection of detonation devices used during the turbulent period in Northern Ireland from approximately 1970 to 1979. The image serves as a poignant reminder of the military efforts to maintain peace and security during this time of conflict. The detonation devices on display are essential components of the explosive ordnance disposal (EOD) arsenal, employed to safely disarm or destroy explosives. The devices include a variety of types, each designed for specific purposes. The first device, at the center of the photograph, is a Time-Pinned Detonator. Its distinctive red and green stripes denote its function: the green stripe indicates the electrical connection, while the red stripe signifies the explosive charge. To the left of the Time-Pinned Detonator lies a Pressure Plate Detonator. This device is designed to detonate an explosive charge when sufficient pressure is applied to its surface. The third device, on the right, is a Radio Controlled Detonator. This advanced piece of technology allows for the remote detonation of explosives, providing a safer alternative to personnel being in close proximity to the explosive charge. The presence of these detonation devices in this photograph underscores the importance of the Royal Engineers' role in maintaining peace and security during a time of conflict. Their expertise in explosive ordnance disposal was crucial in mitigating the threat posed by improvised explosive devices and other explosive materials used during this period. This photograph serves as a testament to the bravery and dedication of the soldiers who put their lives on the line to protect the people of Northern Ireland.
