Crossing Limerick Ruin Rebellions

EDITORS COMMENTS
Desmonds Castle, Askeaton, County Limerick, Ireland: A Glimpse into the Past This evocative photograph captures the haunting beauty of Desmonds Castle in Askeaton, County Limerick, Ireland. Dating back to 1199, the castle stands as a testament to the rich history and complex past of this enchanting country. The castle was once the stronghold of the powerful FitzGerald dynasty, also known as the Geraldines, who ruled over Munster during the Middle Ages. However, the tranquil scene depicted in this image belies the turbulent history of Desmonds Castle. In the late 16th century, during the Desmond Rebellions, the castle was abandoned to the crown forces in 1580. The defenders, led by the Earl of Desmond, were unable to prevent the English from taking Carrigafoyle Castle, and in their desperation, they blew up the castle walls as they retreated. The castle has since stood in ruins, its once imposing walls now crumbling and overgrown with ivy. The river Deel, which flows gently beneath the bridge, adds to the serene atmosphere, but the castle's history is far from peaceful. The Earl of Desmond's rebellions against the English rule were part of a larger struggle for power and identity in Ireland during the Elizabethan era. This photograph, taken in the 1910s, offers a glimpse into the past, inviting us to imagine the lives of those who once called Desmonds Castle home. The castle's ruins now stand as a reminder of the complex and often tumultuous history of Ireland and its people.
