EDITORS COMMENTS

This handcolored copperplate stipple engraving depicts three distinct rodent species native to the Americas: Desmarest's hutia (Capromys pilorides), Karoo bush rat (Myotomys unisulcatus), and Desmarest's description of the Capromys species in his "Dictionary of Natural Science: Mammals," published in Paris, France, in 1816. The illustration was created by Jean Gabriel Pretre, a painter of natural history at Empress Josephine's zoo, and later becoming the artist to the Museum of Natural History. The engraving was executed by Massard, under the direction of Pierre Jean-Francois Turpin, and published by F.G. Levrault. The Desmarest's hutia, also known as the Hispaniolan hutia or crab-eating hutia, is a large, herbivorous rodent endemic to the Caribbean island of Hispaniola. Its body is covered in coarse, brown fur, with a long, bushy tail and webbed hind feet, which enable it to swim and climb trees with ease. The Karoo bush rat, on the other hand, is a small, omnivorous rodent native to South Africa. It has a light brown coat, with a white underbelly and a long, scaly tail. This species is well adapted to arid environments and is an important seed disperser in the ecosystem. The engraving provides a detailed and accurate representation of these fascinating rodent species, capturing their unique physical characteristics and showcasing the exceptional artistry of the time. The historical significance of this illustration lies in its contribution to the scientific understanding of the natural world during the early 19th century.
