EDITORS COMMENTS
This astronomical chart, hailing from the year 1825, showcases the constellations Delphinus, Sagitta, Aquila, and Antinous. Each figure in this celestial arrangement is rich in mythological lore. Delphinus, the Dolphin, is depicted leaping gracefully above the water, a testament to the agility and playfulness of this beloved aquatic creature. In Greek mythology, Delphinus was transformed into a dolphin by the god Apollo as a reward for saving the life of the god's son, Melicertes, who had been cast into the sea. Sagitta, the Arrow, is represented by a single arrow pointing towards Sagittarius, the Archer. According to myth, Sagitta was the arrow that was shot by the centaur Chiron to slay the monster Typhon, who was terrorizing the gods. Aquila, the Eagle, is shown soaring majestically in the sky. This constellation represents the eagle that carried Zeus, the king of the gods, to the sacred island of Ida, where he was to meet and woo Metis, his future wife. Antinous, a lesser-known constellation, is illustrated with a man holding a bow and arrows. Antinous was a beloved companion of the Roman Emperor Hadrian, who was deified after his untimely death. Hadrian built numerous temples and monuments in Antinous' honor, and the constellation was named in his memory. This exquisite astronomical chart offers a glimpse into the rich tapestry of mythology and the awe-inspiring wonders of the night sky.
