EDITORS COMMENTS
This poignant print depicts the final moments of the Reverend John Wesley, the influential founder of the Methodist movement in the 18th century. The scene takes place in his London home on March 2, 1791, where Wesley, surrounded by a gathering of friends, family, and colleagues, lies on his deathbed. The reverend is shown with a serene expression, his eyes closed, as he takes his last breath. The group of mourners gathered around Wesley includes, from left to right, Miss Sarah Wesley, a medical assistant; Reverend J. Bradford; Reverend P. Dickinson; Mrs. Charles Wesley, his wife; Reverend T. Rankin; Mrs. E.A. Rogers; Miss Ritchie; Reverend J. Rogers; Reverend J. Creighton; Master Rogers, a young boy; R.C. Brackenbury; Reverend T. Broadbent; Reverend A. Mather; Reverend J. Broadbent; J. Horton; Reverend G. Whitfield; Dr. Whitehead; and Reverend J. Edmonson. The engraving, published by William Sartain in 1841, was created by the renowned artist John Sartain. It provides a powerful visual representation of the deep respect and admiration that Wesley's contemporaries held for him, as they gathered to pay their final respects to the man who had dedicated his life to spreading the word of God and improving the lives of countless individuals through his teachings and charitable works.
