EDITORS COMMENTS
This haunting image captures the moment of Conan's demise, as the burgess (political official) of Rouen, France, plunges to his death from the top of a towering fortification. Conan, a cunning and ambitious political figure, had conspired against his city's rightful ruler, Robert, the elder son of William I of Normandy. Seizing an opportunity during the temporary English occupation of Rouen, Conan had attempted to hand control of the city to a lieutenant of William Rufus, Henry. Despite their previous quarrels, Henry, brother of William Rufus, came to the aid of his elder brother. Henry's swift intervention drove back the traitorous lieutenant and secured the city for Robert. In retaliation for Conan's betrayal, Henry ordered the burgess's arrest and, as depicted in this print, threw him from the top of the imposing tower. The date of this pivotal event is estimated to be around 1089. The image evokes a sense of treachery, power struggles, and the harsh realities of medieval politics. The dark, ominous sky and the stark contrast between the light and shadow further emphasize the gravity of the situation. The print, with its intricate details and masterful shading, offers a glimpse into the past, transporting us back to a time of political intrigue and power plays in the heart of Normandy.
