The Dazzler by Higgins, Norman Wilkinson

Lieut.-Commander Norman Wilkinson, R.N.V.R. at work in his studio. The success achieved by this gallant officer in beating the U-boats was entirely due to copious experiments carried out regardless of personal comfort or his own studio furniture. The extreme secrecy of the work, moreover, proved an incessant strain. Wilkinson developed and led the use of a widely used disruptive coloration in naval camouflage, for which he coined the well-known term " dazzle painting" or dazzle camouflage. Date: 1919

EDITORS COMMENTS
In this photograph, we find Lieut.-Commander Norman Wilkinson, R.N.V.R., a gallant officer and pioneering artist, deeply engrossed in his studio work during the aftermath of the First World War. The image, taken in 1919, reveals Wilkinson in the midst of his creative process, surrounded by the chaos of his studio, which stands as a testament to his relentless pursuit of innovation. Wilkinson's groundbreaking achievements in the realm of naval camouflage were instrumental in the Allied victory against the formidable U-boat threat during the war. His unwavering dedication to experimentation, regardless of personal comfort or studio furniture, led to the development of a widely used disruptive coloration technique. This innovative approach, which he coined "dazzle painting" or "dazzle camouflage," would prove to be a pivotal contribution to maritime warfare. The extreme secrecy surrounding Wilkinson's work added an incessant strain to his creative process. The importance of his work demanded unyielding discretion, as the success of the Allied forces relied heavily on the effectiveness of this new camouflage technique. In this photograph, we witness an artist at work, his intense focus evident as he paints a caricature on an easel. The image serves as a reminder of the extraordinary individuals who, through their creativity and ingenuity, played a crucial role in the history of warfare. Wilkinson's legacy continues to resonate, as his pioneering work in dazzle painting remains a fascinating chapter in the annals of both art and military history.
