1872 Dombrain Honywood Lilium Lily Worthington Smith

EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning handcolored lithograph depicts the crimson and yellow Lilium washingtonianum, or Washington lily, a beautiful and rare bulbous plant native to the Pacific Northwest region of North America. The exquisite illustration was drawn and lithographed by the talented Worthington G. Smith, an architect, engraver, and mycologist, for the Floral Magazine in 1872. Smith's intricate and detailed work showcases the vibrant colors and delicate petals of the lily, which blooms in late spring and summer. The Floral Magazine was edited by Henry Honywood Dombrain, a clergyman and gardener, from 1862 to 1873. Dombrain was known for his passion for horticulture and his dedication to promoting the cultivation and appreciation of exotic and rare plants. The publication of this lithograph in the Floral Magazine would have provided its readership with valuable information about the growing conditions and characteristics of the Washington lily, as well as inspiring admiration for its beauty. The handcoloring of the lithograph adds an additional layer of artistry to the piece, bringing out the rich hues of the crimson and yellow petals and enhancing the overall visual impact of the illustration. This historical botanical print is a testament to the beauty and importance of the natural world, as well as the dedication and skill of the artists and publishers who captured it for future generations to enjoy.
