The photograph, painted by renowned British artist Richard Caton Woodville in 1914, depicts a pivotal moment in the Battle of Mons at Audregnies on August 24, 1914. In the foreground, Captain Grenfell is shown leading his men in the retrieval of guns from the 119th Battery Royal Field Artillery. The guns had been abandoned during the chaotic retreat of the British Expeditionary Force (BEF) in the face of the advancing German army.
