Coventry, Warwickshire, England - The Pilgrims Rest Inn

Coventry, Warwickshire, England - The Pilgrims Rest Inn on the corner of Pamer Street and Ironmonger Row. A hostel was erected in Palmer Lane for the lodging of pilgrims by the Benedicitne Priory of Coventry, bearing in mind that the first floor rooms over the west range of the Priory would have been used for the guest accommodation for the better class of pilgrims. This original Pilgrims Rest was demolished in 1820 and replaced by a new brick public house (pictured here) together with two dwelling houses. On the corner house a tablet was fixed saying: PALMER LANE - Upon this site stood the Western part of a large and very Ancient Edifice called THE PILGRIMS REST. It was supposed to have been the Hostel or Inn for The Maintenance and Entertainment of the Palmers And other Visitors to the Priory of Benedictine Monks which stood near to the Eastward. It became ruinous and was taken down AD MDCCCXX when this house was erected..... (this sign can be seen in the centre of the postcard). Demolished in 1936. Date: circa 1905

EDITORS COMMENTS
1. Title: The Pilgrims Rest Inn, Coventry, Warwickshire, England: A Historical Landmark of Hospitality and Pilgrimage 2.. Nestled on the corner of Pamer Street and Ironmonger Row in Coventry, Warwickshire, England, stands The Pilgrims Rest Inn, a historic pub with a rich and intriguing past. This charming building, pictured here circa 1905, was erected in the late 19th century to replace an earlier hostel that had been in operation since the medieval period. 3. Background: The original Pilgrims Rest was built by the Benedictine Priory of Coventry as a lodging house for pilgrims visiting the priory. The priory, located nearby to the east, was a popular destination for religious pilgrims seeking spiritual enlightenment and healing. The first-floor rooms over the west range of the priory were used for the better class of pilgrims, while the original Pilgrims Rest provided accommodation for the common travelers. 4. History: The original Pilgrims Rest was demolished in 1820 and replaced by a new brick public house, along with two dwelling houses. A tablet was fixed to the corner house, bearing a testament to the site's rich history: "PALMER LANE - Upon this site stood the Western part of a large and very Ancient Edifice called THE PILGRIMS REST. It was supposed to have been the Hostel or Inn for The Maintenance and Entertainment of the Palmers And other Visitors to the Priory of Benedictine Monks which stood near to the Eastward. It became ruinous and was taken down AD MDCCCXX when this house was erected." 5. Demise: Sadly, The Pilgrims Rest Inn was demolished once again in 1936, leaving behind only memories and historical records of its storied past. Today, the site stands as a reminder of the importance of hospitality and the role it played in the lives of medieval pilgrims and travelers.
