Title: "Countess Constance Markievicz: A Rebel Irishwoman in the 1916 Easter Rising" Countess Constance Markievicz, born as Constance Gore-Booth in 1868, was the elder daughter of Sir Henry Gore-Booth, a prominent Anglo-Irish landowner from County Sligo, Ireland. In her late twenties, she met and married Polish Count Casimir Markievicz in Paris. The couple later settled in Dublin, where Constance became deeply involved in nationalist politics. Markievicz's political activism began in earnest when she joined the Irish Republican Brotherhood and later the radical nationalist organization, Sinn Fein. Her commitment to the cause intensified following the execution of her brother, Sir Henry Gore-Booth, in 1916 for his role in the Easter Rising. In the days leading up to the Easter Rising, Markievicz played a pivotal role in organizing the rebellion, serving as a commander of the Dublin Brigade's Citizen Army. She was arrested following the insurrection and sentenced to death for her involvement. However, her sentence was later commuted to life imprisonment due to her gender. Markievicz was released from prison in 1917 and continued her activism, becoming the first woman to be elected to the British House of Commons in 1918, although she did not take her seat. She went on to serve as Minister for Social Welfare in the first Dáil Éireann (Irish parliament) in 1919.
