EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative image, titled "The Cookers - near Villers-Bretonneux, Somme, 1918," is a poignant reminder of the daily realities of life on the Western Front during World War I. Australian Lieutenant Will Dyson, a prolific war artist with the Australian Imperial Force, captured this scene of soldiers preparing a meal amidst the chaos and destruction of battle. Dyson, born in 1880, joined the Australian Army in 1914 and was wounded twice before being appointed as an official war artist. His unique perspective as both a soldier and an artist allowed him to create a body of work that vividly portrays the experiences of Australian soldiers in the trenches. This particular drawing was created in 1918, during the final stages of the war. The soldiers in the image are seen huddled around a makeshift fire, cooking their rations in a large pot. The smoke from the fire rises into the sky, contrasting with the barren, muddy landscape that surrounds them. The soldiers' expressions are weary and focused, a testament to the physical and emotional toll of war. Dyson's work was exhibited in London and published in the book "Australia at War" in November 1918. His drawings are considered some of the finest depictions of the Australian experience during World War I, offering a glimpse into the lives of the soldiers who fought on the Western Front. This image, with its raw and unflinching portrayal of life in the trenches, serves as a powerful reminder of the sacrifices made by the soldiers of the Australian Imperial Force during the First World War.
