EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph showcases the elegant beauty of the extinct Ryukyu Pigeon, scientifically known as Columba jouyi. The image, skillfully captured by photographer Harry Taylor in 2009, presents a well-preserved specimen of this rare and enigmatic bird. Originally native to the Ryukyu Islands in Okinawa, Japan, the Ryukyu Pigeon was characterized by its distinctive silver bands encircling its neck and wings, earning it various names such as the Silver Banded Pigeon or the Silver Crescented Pigeon. Belonging to the Columbidae family, and more specifically the Columba genus, this pigeon was a medium-sized bird with a brown plumage and long, pointed wings. The Sauropsida class, to which the Ryukyu Pigeon belongs, includes reptiles and birds, while the Columbiformes order encompasses pigeons and doves. The Ryukyu Pigeon was a cherished symbol of the Ryukyu Kingdom, and its image was often depicted in ancient art and pottery. However, due to habitat loss and hunting, the species became extinct in the wild in the late 19th century. Today, specimens like the one in this photograph serve as important reminders of the natural history and biodiversity that once thrived in the Ryukyu Islands. This studio shot of the Columba jouyi specimen is a testament to the intrigue and allure of the natural world, as well as the dedication of photographers like Harry Taylor in documenting and preserving the beauty and rarity of extinct species.
