EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative print by Fortunino Matania, titled "Proposed Reconstruction of the Circus Maximus in Rome - the Circus at its Zenith," transports us back to ancient Rome during the height of the Circus Maximus' glory. The grandeur of the arena is on full display, with an estimated 480,000 people gathered to witness the thrilling spectacles of wild beast hunts and chariot races. At the center of the image, a mounted archer engages in a fierce battle with an oncoming lion. The lion, its mane bristling with determination, is poised to pounce, while the archer, with a steely gaze, readies his bow and arrow. The raw power and intensity of the encounter are palpable, a testament to the adrenaline-pumping entertainment that the Circus Maximus provided. The Circus Maximus, one of the largest and most famous structures of ancient Rome, was a symbol of the city's grandeur and power. The last official assembly for the games took place in 549 AD under the rule of Totila the Ostrogoth. This print, created in 1925, offers a captivating glimpse into the past, allowing us to imagine the excitement and energy that once filled the ancient amphitheater. Matania's masterful use of light and shadow, combined with his attention to detail, brings the scene to life, making it an invaluable historical record and a stunning work of art. This print is a must-have for anyone with an interest in ancient Rome, gladiatorial games, or the history of entertainment.
