EDITORS COMMENTS
This lantern slide depicts a breathtaking view looking north from the Altar of Heaven in Peking, or Beijing, China, during the late 19th century. The Altar of Heaven, a complex of ancient sacrificial buildings, is one of the grandest and best-preserved ancient sacrificial sites in China. It was built during the Yuan Dynasty (1271-1368 AD) and expanded during the Ming Dynasty (1368-1644 AD). The altar was the place where the emperor performed the most important rituals to pray for a good harvest and peace. In this image, we can see the vast expanse of the northern sky, dotted with clouds, and the sprawling city of Peking spreading out below. The Forbidden City, the imperial palace complex, is visible in the center, surrounded by its fortified walls. The intricate roofs of traditional Chinese buildings can be seen throughout the city, their red tiles and dark wooden structures contrasting against the blue sky. The serene landscape is further enhanced by the presence of several large, ancient trees, their leaves a vibrant green, and the occasional temple or pavilion nestled among them. The Altar of Heaven was a significant site during the late 19th century when Western influence began to spread throughout China. This lantern slide provides a unique glimpse into the past, offering a window into the rich history and culture of China during this period. The image captures the beauty and grandeur of the ancient altar and the bustling city of Peking, offering a fascinating glimpse into a bygone era.
