Title: A Distinguished Jesuit Leader: Charles de Noyelle (1615-1686) Charles de Noyelle, born in 1615, was a prominent French Jesuit churchman who served as the Prepositor-General of the Society of Jesus from 1675 until his death in 1686. His leadership during a tumultuous period in the history of the Jesuit Order left an indelible mark on the institution and the Catholic Church as a whole. De Noyelle was born in the diocese of Laon, France, and entered the Society of Jesus in 1631. He excelled in his studies, earning a doctorate in theology from the prestigious College de Clermont in Paris. Over the course of his career, he held numerous important positions within the Jesuit Order, including rector of the College de Clermont and provincial of the French province. However, it was his tenure as Prepositor-General that would bring him the greatest recognition. He assumed this role during a time of significant upheaval for the Jesuits, as the Order faced increasing opposition from various quarters, including the papacy and secular authorities. De Noyelle navigated these challenges with skill and diplomacy, working to maintain the Jesuits' autonomy and defend their mission.
