Charles Hare Hemphill, 1st Baron Hemphill (1822-1908): The Irish Serjeant This striking portrait captures Charles Hare Hemphill, 1st Baron Hemphill, an influential Irish politician and barrister during the late Victorian era. Born in 1822, Hemphill rose to prominence in Irish politics and the legal profession, serving as Solicitor-General for Ireland from 1892 to 1895. His political career culminated in his election as the Member of Parliament for North Tyrone from 1895 to 1906. Hemphill's impressive legal background began with his education at Trinity College Dublin and the Inns of Court in London. He was called to the Irish Bar in 1848 and to the English Bar in 1851. Hemphill's legal expertise and political acumen earned him a reputation as a formidable figure in Irish politics. As Solicitor-General for Ireland, Hemphill played a crucial role in the administration of justice in Ireland during a time of significant political and social change. His tenure saw the implementation of various reforms aimed at improving the legal system and addressing the needs of the Irish population. In 1895, Hemphill was elected as the Member of Parliament for North Tyrone, representing the Liberal Party. During his time in Parliament, he advocated for the rights of the Irish people and worked to address issues related to land ownership and agricultural reform. This photograph, taken during Hemphill's later years, captures the distinguished and authoritative air of a man who dedicated his life to the service of his country and its people. The title "The Irish Serjeant" pays homage to his legal background and his significant contributions to Irish politics.
