EDITORS COMMENTS
Charles Coburn, affectionately known as The Tramp Comedian, Vocalist, Reciter, and Story Merchant, is depicted in this photograph taken in 1926. At the age of 49, Coburn's fame as a music hall star had reached new heights with his rendition of the popular song "Two Lovely Black Eyes," which he first performed in 1886. However, by the 1920s, the vogue for the charismatic elder statesman of entertainment had waned. Undeterred, Coburn sought to rekindle his popularity by embarking on a remarkable journey. With a determined stride and a trilby hat shading his eyes, he set out to walk between his performances, covering impressive distances that totaled an astonishing 3000 miles. This photograph captures the essence of his indomitable spirit as he strides forward, a gentleman of the road. The caricature drawn by Thomas Downey, which graces this card, adds a touch of whimsy to the image. Coburn's likeness is rendered with humor and affection, reflecting the enduring appeal of this legendary performer. The card was produced by Willsons of Leicester in 1950, serving as a testament to Coburn's enduring legacy in the world of entertainment.
