EDITORS COMMENTS
Plate 209 from John James Audubon's renowned work, "Birds of America," showcases the intricately detailed illustration of a Wilson's Plover (Charadrius wilsonia), also known as the Wilson's Phalarope. This print, originally from the double elephant folio edition produced between 1834 and 1835, was hand-coloured aquatint engraved, printed, and coloured by R. Havell (& Son) in London. The Wilson's Plover is a small, wading bird belonging to the Charadriidae family, which is part of the larger Charadriiformes order. This bird is characterized by its distinctive striped breast and back, with a white belly and a long, thin, down-curved beak. The Wilson's Plover is a shorebird, often found near the water's edge, and is known for its agile movements as it forages for food in the sand or mud. Audubon's meticulous observation and artistic skill are evident in this stunning representation of the Wilson's Plover. The bird is depicted in its natural habitat, standing on the shore, with the sun casting a warm glow over the scene. The attention to detail in the plover's feathers, as well as the texture of the sand and water, brings the image to life. The Wilson's Plover is a sauropsid, a group of reptile-descended vertebrates that includes birds and their closest living relatives. This Sauropsid is a common sight during daytime hours, making it an essential addition to Audubon's extensive collection of North American birds. The outside of the print showcases the intricate engraving and hand-colouring techniques that were used to bring the image to life, making it a true masterpiece of natural history art.
