EDITORS COMMENTS
Plate 330 from John James Audubon's esteemed work, "Birds of America," showcases the intricately detailed illustration of a Semipalmated Plover (Charadrius semipalmatus). This print, originally from the double elephant folio edition produced between 1835 and 1838, is an exquisite example of 19th-century natural history art. The Semipalmated Plover, a small shorebird belonging to the Charadriidae family, is depicted in this hand-coloured aquatint engraving by R. Havell (& Son) of London. The bird is shown standing on a rocky shore, its long, slender legs and bright orange-red legs contrasting against the cool, grey stones. The Semipalmated Plover is named for the semi-webbed feet it uses to navigate the shallow waters of its coastal habitats. The plover's distinctive collar, which appears as a dark line around its neck, is clearly visible in this meticulously rendered illustration. Its body is adorned with a mottled brown and white plumage, providing excellent camouflage among the pebbles and sand. The Semipalmated Plover is a member of the Sauropsida class, which includes reptiles and birds, and the Charadriiformes order, which includes shorebirds. This bird is commonly found along the shores of the Atlantic and Arctic Oceans during the daytime. Audubon's "Birds of America" is considered a masterpiece of natural history illustration, and this plate is a testament to the skill and dedication of the artist and engravers. The intricate details and lifelike accuracy of the illustration make it a valuable addition to any collection of natural history art or ornithology.
