This reptile is a diapsid, meaning it has a pair of openings, or diapsids, in the skull for the mandibular and maxillary bones. It is part of the larger group of Sauropsida, which includes all descendants of the last common ancestor of reptiles and birds. The Chamaeleoninae subfamily, to which C. zeylanicus belongs, is characterized by their long, sticky tongues, which they use to capture their prey.
