EDITORS COMMENTS
This caricature depicts a moment of serious discussion between two esteemed naval figures during the Anglo-Egyptian War of 1882. In the foreground, Captain Lord Charles William de la Poer Beresford of the Royal Navy, later an Admiral, is shown attentively listening to the instructions of Admiral Frederick Beauchamp Paget Seymour. The Admiral, also a Royal Navy officer, wears his full admiral's uniform adorned with gold braid and medals, while Beresford dons his captain's uniform with a peaked cap and a cigarette in hand. The scene unfolds on the deck of a gunboat, possibly HMS Condor, as both men gaze intently towards the horizon, with Alexandria's coastline visible in the background. The war between Great Britain and Egypt had erupted in response to the growing unrest and the perceived threat to British interests in the region. Seymour, as the Commander-in-Chief of the Mediterranean Fleet, was responsible for ensuring the safety of British forces and civilians during the conflict. Amidst the chaos and uncertainty of war, Seymour addresses Beresford with a sense of urgency, requesting him to prevent looting on both sides during the bombardment of Alexandria. The gravity of the situation is evident in their expressions and body language, as they recognize the importance of maintaining order and upholding the principles of fairness and respect for civilian populations. This caricature, created by the renowned artist Terry Parker, offers a fascinating glimpse into the 1880s and the Victorian era, capturing the essence of the Anglo-Egyptian War and the crucial role played by these two naval officers in maintaining order and upholding British values.
