Car Park at Moat Farm Roadhouse, Wrotham, Kent

View of Moat Farm roadhouse in Wrotham, Kent. Roadhouses became established in Britain during the inter-war years, particularly in the south-east and suburbs of London as increased car ownership caused people to seek venues that combined leisure facilities with motoring. Roadhouses often began as petrol stations or were already inns, but they variously offered dining, dancing, cabaret, cocktails and, in the case of Moat Farm, a swimming pool. Moat Farm still operates today as a pub, and uses its fourteenth century barn for functions. However, the swimming pool is long gone. Date: early 1930s

EDITORS COMMENTS
In this evocative photograph, taken in the early 1930s, we see the picturesque Moat Farm Roadhouse in Wrotham, Kent. Nestled amidst the rolling hills and verdant countryside of rural England, Moat Farm Roadhouse was a popular destination for motorists during the inter-war years. As car ownership became more widespread in Britain, particularly in the south-east and suburbs of London, roadhouses like Moat Farm emerged as hubs of leisure and relaxation for weary travellers. Originally established as an inn, Moat Farm Roadhouse soon expanded to offer a range of amenities catering to the motoring public. The photograph captures the roadhouse in its heyday, with cars neatly parked in the spacious car park, their owners no doubt enjoying the various facilities on offer. Among these attractions was a swimming pool, which added an extra dimension to the roadhouse experience, allowing visitors to unwind and cool off after a long journey. Moat Farm Roadhouse's combination of rustic charm and modern conveniences proved to be a winning formula. The roadhouse's fourteenth-century barn, which can be seen in the background of the photograph, was repurposed for functions and events, adding to the roadhouse's appeal. Today, Moat Farm continues to operate as a pub, but the swimming pool is no longer in use. Nonetheless, this photograph offers a fascinating glimpse into a bygone era, when roadhouses like Moat Farm provided essential services for the growing number of car-owning Britons, offering them a place to rest, refuel, and revel in the joys of the open road.
