This evocative photograph captures the young and determined face of Captain R.E. Young, M.C. (Military Cross) of the Middlesex Regiment, during his service in the Somme region of France in 1916. Captain Young, whose full name is Stanley Llewellyn Wood, was born in 1888 in England. Despite the harsh conditions and the constant threat of danger, Captain Young displayed exceptional courage and leadership, earning him the Military Cross. He led his company in an attack on the enemy's position, and, although severely wounded, continued to encourage and rally his men until the objective was gained."
