Born on 15th April 1886 in County Armagh, Northern Ireland, Frankland Bell enlisted in the British Army in 1903, joining the Royal Inniskilling Fusiliers. On 1st July 1916, during the Battle of the Somme, the 9th Battalion Royal Inniskilling Fusiliers faced heavy enemy fire near Thiepval. Amidst the chaos and carnage, Frankland Bell led his men with unwavering determination, repeatedly exposing himself to enemy fire to encourage his soldiers and direct their efforts. As the battle raged on, Frankland Bell single-handedly captured a German machine gun post, eliminating its crew and securing a vital position for his battalion. His extraordinary acts of bravery earned him the Victoria Cross, the highest military decoration for valor in the British and Commonwealth armed forces.
