EDITORS COMMENTS
Captain Augustus Hartmann, a distinguished officer in the 2nd Line Battalion of the Kings German Legion during the Napoleonic Wars, is depicted in this striking oil on panel painting by Paul Dumortier. Painted in Tournai, Belgium, in 1815, just before the fateful Battle of Waterloo, the portrait shows Captain Hartmann with a serious expression, his head turned to the right. The intricately detailed decorative gilt frame adds to the grandeur of the image. Captain Hartmann, who served in the German army from 1803 to 1816, is shown wearing the uniform of the Kings German Legion, complete with the distinctive blue facings and white lace. The inscription on the reverse of the painting, written in pen and ink, provides additional information about the subject and the artist. The Battle of Waterloo, which took place on June 18, 1815, was a significant turning point in European history. The defeat of Napoleon Bonaparte marked the end of his rule and the restoration of the Bourbon monarchy in France. Captain Hartmann's involvement in this historic conflict adds to the historical significance of this beautiful and intricately detailed portrait. Paul Dumortier (1778-1856) was a renowned Belgian painter, known for his portraits and historical scenes. His skillful use of light and shadow, as well as his attention to detail, are evident in this image of Captain Augustus Hartmann. The painting is a testament to the artist's ability to capture the essence of a historical figure and bring him to life for future generations to appreciate.
