EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph captures a memorable moment in the rich history of The Capitals Lacrosse Club of Canada during their visit to the Battersby Hat Factory in Stockport, England in 1906. The Capitals Lacrosse Club, which still exists today, was composed of Canada's elite lacrosse players, and their international travels were a testament to the growing popularity of the sport. The Battersby family, renowned milliners and hat manufacturers, were not only accomplished businesspeople but also avid lacrosse enthusiasts. For many years, it was a common occurrence for notable figures and celebrities to visit their works in Stockport. In this image, members of The Capitals Lacrosse Club can be seen proudly displaying their lacrosse equipment and attire, while the Battersby family and their employees look on with admiration. Unfortunately, the visitors book from the Battersby Hat Factory was lost when the factory eventually closed in 1966. This valuable historical record would have provided invaluable insights into the lives of these early lacrosse pioneers and their interactions with the British hat-making industry. The photograph, however, serves as a poignant reminder of the connections between sport, fashion, and industry during this era. The players' distinctive uniforms and equipment, which include leather helmets, padded shirts, and lacrosse sticks, showcase the evolution of lacrosse attire from its Indigenous roots to the modern game. The intricate headwear and hats produced by the Battersby family add a touch of elegance and sophistication to the scene. This photograph is a fascinating glimpse into the past, illustrating the intersection of Canadian lacrosse, British millinery, and the enduring appeal of sporting traditions.
