1866 1938 Bust Cavell Edith Nurse Oakley

EDITORS COMMENTS
Bust of Nurse Edith Cavell: A Tribute to a Heroine of World War I This striking bust, crafted by the renowned British sculptor Edward Woodall Oakley (1866-1938), immortalizes the image of Edith Cavell (1865-1915), a remarkable woman who dedicated her life to nursing and saving lives during the tumultuous period of World War I. Edith Cavell was a British nurse who worked in Brussels, Belgium, during the early years of the war. She opened her doors to soldiers from both sides of the conflict, providing them with medical care and shelter. Her humanitarian efforts earned her the trust and admiration of the Allied forces, but also drew the attention of the German military authorities. In August 1915, Cavell was arrested and charged with treason for helping British soldiers escape from occupied Belgium. Despite the grave danger, she refused to betray her patients or her country. On October 12, 1915, she was executed by firing squad, becoming a symbol of courage and resistance during the war. Edward Woodall Oakley created this bust of Edith Cavell in 1938, capturing her unwavering determination and compassionate spirit. The intricately detailed sculpture showcases Cavell's calm and resolute expression, her hands gently folded in her lap, and her uniform adorned with the insignia of the Order of Mercy. The Bust of Nurse Edith Cavell stands as a poignant reminder of the sacrifices made by ordinary people during times of war and the enduring power of compassion and selflessness. This historical artifact continues to inspire and captivate audiences, offering a glimpse into the past and the indomitable human spirit.
