EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative photograph captures the tense atmosphere at Potsdam Bahnhof on 17 March 1920, during the Kapp Putsch, a failed right-wing coup attempt in Germany. The Freikorps soldiers, a paramilitary force, are seen gathered at the railway station, their determined expressions and military posture conveying a sense of readiness for action. The Kapp Putsch, named after its leader, Wolfgang Kapp, was an attempt to overthrow the German government and install a new regime. The Freikorps, made up of veterans of World War I and other right-wing groups, played a central role in the putsch. The events leading up to this moment began on 13 March 1920, when Kapp and his supporters seized control of the Prussian Ministry of the Interior and proclaimed a new government. The German military, however, remained loyal to the legitimate government and refused to support the putschists. In response, the Freikorps were called upon to help suppress any resistance. Despite initial successes, the putsch quickly unraveled. The German military, with the support of the workers and the socialist militias, managed to regain control of the situation. By 17 March, the Freikorps were making their way to Potsdam Bahnhof, where they were met with heavy resistance from the German military and left-wing forces. The photograph captures a pivotal moment in this chaotic and violent chapter of German history. The failure of the Kapp Putsch marked the end of the German military's involvement in politics and paved the way for the eventual rise of Adolf Hitler and the Nazi Party.
