EDITORS COMMENTS
This exquisite Etruscan bronze mirror, dating from the 4th century BC, is a stunning example of the artistic achievements of the ancient Etruscan civilization. The mirror, which measures approximately 12.5 centimeters in diameter, was discovered in Perugia, possibly made in the neighboring city of Vulci, and is now on display at the British Museum in London, England. The circular mirror is adorned with intricate chased decoration, including an engraved scene of Thetis and Peleus, two prominent figures from Greek mythology. Thetis, a sea goddess, is depicted in the scene as a beautiful and regal figure, seated on a throne and holding a fan. She is attended by two maidens, one of whom holds a mirror. Peleus, a mortal hero, is shown standing before Thetis, holding a spear and wearing a helmet. The scene represents the moment when Peleus was granted the hand of Thetis in marriage by her father, Nereus, after he had proven himself worthy by completing a series of tasks. The handle of the mirror is made of bone, further enhancing its beauty and intrigue. The mirror's surface, though worn with age, still reflects a clear image, providing a glimpse into the past and offering a window into the rich history and culture of the Etruscan civilization. This magnificent object, with its mythological scene and exquisite craftsmanship, is a testament to the artistic and historical significance of the Etruscan people and their enduring influence on the world of art and antiquity.
