EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative photograph captures a moment of historical significance as the Maharaja of Patiala, Maharaja Bhupinder Singh (1891-1938), inspects a British 12 inch Mark III railway Howitzer during the First World War. The Maharaja, who served on the General Staff in France, Belgium, Italy, and Palestine, is prominently dressed in his full military uniform, adorned with his distinctive Sikh turban. The year is 1918, and the location is near Borre in France, on the Western Front. The Maharaja's involvement in the war was significant, and he held the rank of Honorary Lieutenant-Colonel, later being promoted to Honorary Major-General in 1918. The British army valued the Maharaja's expertise and leadership, and his presence on the front lines was a testament to the strong alliance between India and Great Britain during the war. The 12 inch Mark III railway Howitzer, a powerful artillery piece, is camouflaged and painted in a discreet pattern to blend in with the surroundings. The gunners, dressed in their own uniforms, stand at attention, ready to assist the Maharaja during the inspection. The scene is a reminder of the crucial role that artillery played during the First World War and the diverse contributions of soldiers from various parts of the world. This photograph, taken by Robert Hunt, is a valuable historical record of the Maharaja's service during the war and the complex relationship between India and Great Britain during this period. It is a testament to the bravery and dedication of soldiers from all corners of the world who fought in the Great War.
